What kind of artwork are you looking for?

It really is open to interpretation. The theme this year is Unspoken Secrets, a line from the Phantom of the Opera. You are welcome to let your creativity go wild in interpretation. All subject areas are welcome – fruit, landscape, abstract, figurative – it is really what gets your own juices going. All mediums are welcome – visual, written, spoken, mixed media, etc.

Sculpture is welcome, but you must supply your own plinths. Indicate you are aware of this when you do your submission.

Video is also welcome, you will need to supply your own equipment.  Again, indicate you are aware of this when you do your submission.

I don’t know how erotic the works should be, or how applicable my works are to the show, or can you screen them for me? (you get the idea)

Sorry, no I can not screen them for you under any circumstances. I am part of the jury process, and I keep myself arms length from anything to do with the artists until jury time. I do not screen to say works are acceptable or not. I do not choose works from artists to include.

I have a friend who would be great for this show, can you look at his website or contact him?

If you have someone who would be interested or interesting to have in the show, please forward the information to him/her and have them apply or do the research, I do not do any screening or inviting of artists.

I entered last year (or previous years), and was accepted, do I need to apply again?

Yes, each year artists must re-apply.

How do I enter?

You can go to the Submission page, and download the entry form. I have tried to make it as web friendly as possible, by including the ability to enter through email to submissions@okanaganeroticartshow.com and pay via paypal. If you are not comfortable using paypal, that is not a problem, please send your entry fees via cheque to Okanagan Erotic Art Show, c/o Julia Trops Venus is Rising Studio Box 32093 West Kelowna BC V4T 3G2. If you prefer, you can send a money order for the entry fees – from the States, please use a pink (international) postal money order, or if you go to the bank, make sure the money order is cashable in Canada.

Why are you charging me $1 an entry if I use paypal?

In the past, I have absorbed the fees that Paypal has charged me, but I can not do that any longer. Paypal fees are passed on to the artist. While using paypal is easier and convenient for the artist to enter, it is not easier for me to use. I’d rather everyone paid by cheque.

How do I label my images?

Please see this page: http://www.okanaganeroticartshow.com/submissions/submission-process-images-bio-statement/ It talks about images, biography and artist statements.

Do I have to put a price on my work?

Yes, if it is for sale. Works with no prices will be labeled “Not for Sale” (NFS).

Does my work have to be for sale to be considered for the show?

No, the work does not have to be for sale. Please indicate this in your submission papers.

What size should the works be? Do they need to be framed?

The size is up to you.  Works on paper or that should be behind glass needs to be framed yes.  Works on canvas do not have to be framed, though please paint the edges.  All works must be ready for hanging with a wire. I am not installing any hardware. Anything not ready for hanging will not be displayed. Local artists are also asked to supply a nice display easel this year as well as works will be throughout the Resort.

Should I send the actual work to be juried?

No, please send either jpgs through email, or else a cd with your images and text information on it. Do not send any work until you have been told you have been juried in to the show.

How do I send you the images?

Please send them via email to submissions@okanaganeroticartshow.com

What are you looking for in the artist statement?

Please see this page: http://www.okanaganeroticartshow.com/submissions/submission-process-images-bio-statement/ It talks about images, biography and artist statements.

Will there be a catalog? Does it cost? Are you going to pay me for use of my images?

Yes, there will be a catalog. No it does not cost anything extra. I provide this service free of charge because I feel it is important for artists to have a record of their showing. No I do not pay you for your images or royalties, just as you do not pay me for my time and materials in creating the catalog. Yes, there is an ISBN on it, and yes, it can be purchased on the web. No, you are not required to be in the catalog, it is entirely voluntary.  You MUST initial the portion that gives me permission to include your work in the catalog or it does not go in.

What name do I put on the cheque?

Please write the cheque to Okanagan Erotic Art Show. The cheques are not cashed until the deadline has passed and jurying has begun.

Are entry fees refundable?

No entry fees are not refundable. If you send in an entry, your entry fees will be processed. If you do not get in to the show, there is no refund, sorry. If for the highly unlikely event the show does not go through, then all fees will be refunded. If you want to substitute a work, you may up to the Call to Artist deadline only. After that no substitutions will be allowed.

Who is running or organizing the Okanagan Erotic Art Show?

My name is Julia Trops, and I am running and organizing the show. You can find more information about me at http://www.juliatrops.com, or you can see my work at http://www.rubylane.com/shops/canadianartist. Or you can google my  name, there should be a quite a few hits that come back.

Is the show juried?

Absolutely yes, the show is a juried show. Please see the Jury page on this website for more information on who the jurors are. Jurors will consider relation to the theme, originality, medium, presentation, professionalism of entry. You get points if you follow my instructions and make my job easier!

How do I ship my work to you?

I would suggest to pack your work very carefully. You are responsible for getting your work to and from the show. Having sold all over the world, I am very good with packing to return it to you, but I need you to ensure the packing to get to me is above standard. You are paying for the shipping to the show, and for the shipping back to you.

If you are in Canada, please consider using Canadapost, and you can estimate how much it will cost from the website. Use the postal code V1Y 6Z1 for origin back to you. Or alternatively, you can ask your post office to do this for you, and just include the stamps in your package. I highly suggest you use Expedited for shipping so you can track your work.

If you are outside of Canada, you will not be able to include a shipping label or stamps from the US. Please go to the Canadapost website and select “destination” to be the US, and fill out the information by using your package size, originating postal code as V1Y 6Z1 and your destination zip code. Scroll down to where it says “expedited” (not express!) and you will see how much it will cost in Canadian postage to return your art to you. You then have a choice to either send me a cheque for that amount, or send via paypal. It is up to you. But please do not send US stamps as these can not be used in Canada.

Any work not picked up or returned within 30 days after the show is considered abandoned.  I’ve had to install this last requirement because I ended up storing people’s artwork for months after the show.

Can I have a digital work printed in Canada rather than shipping across the border?

Yes.  Contact me for more details.

When do I ship my work?

Plan on early June to arrive mid to late June.

Where do I ship my work?

coming soon

What customs forms do I need?

I’ve put together a package of customs forms for artwork coming in from the States, and potentially going back to the States.  You may choose to use these, or you may not. It is up to you.  I can tell you that by filling these forms out though, and having them with the artwork, the less likely you will be given surprises at the border.

I’d like to help with the show, how do I do that?

Oh, you are wonderful! Please send me a note, and let me know if you are interested in

-unpacking

-setting up (though please note, I will already have a floor plan in place, this is not the time for discussion.)

-staffing

-taking down

-packing

-or anything else.

All works juried in to the erotic show will be featured on the website. The website link is fed to Facebook and Twitter. If you would like to have a watermark on the work if it is juried in by all means you can send the images to me for the web presence. If the work is juried in but you would rather not be on the website that is okay too, just make a note on the form.

Can I invite people to the opening night? Does it cost anything?

Absolutely yes! The more the merrier! Ticket price for opening night is being determined at present. General admission for the show itself is by donation to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association in memory of Tracie Ward. More details to follow.

Any other questions, let me know!

  1. What are the rules as far as “HOW” erotic the images in photography can be? Is penetration, or toys etc allowed?

  2. Hi! Thanks for your question, a good one.
It is an erotic show, and erotic means different things to different people. Please understand while I am NOT a juror, the advice I can give is that if you can relate it to the theme, then go for it. Hope that helps. All the best, Julia

  3. What is meant by size being a factor in the jury process? Does that mean there is a maximum, minimum or preferred size?

  4. Size being a factor means that there is a limited amount of space, and if you submit a work that is very large, you are competing directly against the other pieces that are large, and also against the other works being submitted. There is no maximum or minimum size, but I want the artist to understand space limitations. :-)
