I just got this message in my email. I understand that people are disappointed that they could not enter, however there are some realities that many are not aware of, and when they do become aware, perhaps there is greater understanding. The 2012 show Call to Artists was out for almost six months, and it was widely advertised. If you are interested in the show, it is up to YOU to keep on top of it. Read on:

Message:
I read about last years show while flipping through a fall 2011 issue
of Icon. Since it seems to be an annual show, I was not expecting the
2012 show until sometime this fall.
I looked up this site today and was surprised to find that the show is
already a done deal, deadlines past, pieces selected, dates set, and
opening apparently sold out.
I was thinking I might submit some items for this falls show, but,
surprise, surprise, the show dates are not consistent.
When are you planning to hold the next show? Next January? Next
spring? Next fall? No idea yet?
I really think it would be best if you would select a time of year,
date even, and stick with it.

My response:

Hi XXXX, thank you for your email.

In a beautifully perfect world, it would be as you say, however, the harsh reality is that I am dependent upon who will actually have the show on their premises, and when it fits in to their schedule.

Because I do not pay rent for the show itself, I am at the whim of the property owners. In fact, I do not draw an income from the show at all, regardless of how much work I do for it. And I do it all.

The show itself is funded by all the artist entries, and the budget is very small. This year, I think I have a 1500$ budget, and 500 of that is going to prizes for the artists. If you were to take the time to read the FAQ on the website, there is a lot of information in there.

I am an independent person, and I require all the artists who submit to the show to be equally independent. I do not spoon feed anyone, and I do not beseech any artists to enter. It is up to them to follow the website, or the facebook, or to get on my email list. If you are interested in participating, then I would suggest you do one of those things.

All the best, Julia

One Response to “Why don’t you stick to the same date?”

  1. Hi Julie

Just wanted to let you know I’ll be putting a blurb in my column for May 30 to have people come out until June 22 to see the show at Ex Nihilo.

    Have a great day!
